S tudents today are looking for more than just a traditional university degree. They're looking for hands-on experiences and research and co-op opportunities. They're looking for exposure to the global community and for an education that is focused on mentorship, collaboration and discovery. But most importantly, they want an education that prepares them for their future. This past November, UNB launched the largest fundraising campaign in the history of the university. It Begins Here: The Campaign for the University of New Brunswick has a target of $110 million. Half of our campaign goal – $55 million – will be devoted to support for students, while the other half will be used to strengthen our faculties, build upon our academic strengths and reinforce our place as a Canadian leader in innovation. Above all, we will continue to prepare our students – students like Kelsey Bond, Ethan Augustine and Luke Duffley – to succeed in the world. You'll read more about them in this issue. It gives me great pleasure to announce that more than 75 per cent of our campaign objective has been reached – a feat we could not have accomplished without the support of thousands of UNB alumni like you. The strength of the alumni response to our campaign has underlined for me, the powerful sense of community that defines UNB. This university is blessed to have a community of alumni who are generous and involved, who make investments in their alma mater's future, and who are paying it forward to future generations. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni are bound together by a proud educational tradition that is more than 230 years old. An important part of this tradition is working together, across academic disciplines, international borders and generations, to create new opportunities for UNB's students and researchers, now and in the future. Throughout this issue, you'll read stories about students, faculty, staff and alumni who are working hard every day and giving the best of themselves to make a difference and change lives. I hope you will join us as we strive to give our students, teachers and researchers the best possible opportunities to discover their strengths, hone their talents and make their mark on the world. I firmly believe that UNB can accomplish anything with the support of our alumni, friends and community partners. It begins here! Sincerely, H.E.A.
