| FEATURE story | IN THE BEGINNING UNB has been leading the charge against cyber attacks for close to two decades. In the late 1990s, Chris Newton, UNB student and part-time UNB employee, spent two years designing software that represented a computer network that could monitor and manage potential internal and external threats coming into UNB. Fellow students and IT sta¥ers, Sandy Bird and Dwight Spencer, soon joined in the project. "This was right after the Internet boom and there were a lot of worms and viruses causing havoc on the university's networks," Bird recalls. "We built a technology to detect anomalies in network tra‡c." In the fall of 2000, Newton was invited to present the software at a technology showcase hosted by UNB. This is where he met New Brunswick entrepreneur Brian Flood (BBA'83) who immediately saw the potential for turning Newton's idea into the next great network security company – and the idea for Q1 Labs was born. "It was obvious that the technology had a wider applicability than just the local UNB network," says Bird, CTO of IBM's security business unit and IBM fellow. "The next thing I knew, Chris was asking me if I wanted to start a company." Bird adds that the three friends didn't really know what they were getting into at the time, but acknowledges that, "This was the original spark and from there we started to develop a code base and go through the process of acquiring funding and building a team." Flood, as CEO of Q1 Labs, took on the challenge of looking for Cybersecurity research team.
